SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) for Small Business

Is SEO Important for Small Business, YES!

Why??  83% of Irish people are now online with a staggering 97% of all Irish internet users now shopping online.  It is a known fact that 90% of users will choose a site listed on the first page of Google.  Many business owners invest heavily in their website which is great but you must also ensure that your site is being found by your potential customers to ensure that you’re getting a bigger bang for your buck!

So what exactly is SEO – “it is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results gaining better rankings and organic (non-paid) traffic to a website from search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing.”  – Wikipedia

There are different reasons why SEO is such an effective online marketing strategy; to ensure your site is ranking, gain visibility among your new and existing clients, get ahead of your competitors in the search engine rankings, online reputation, branding and to instil confidence in your customers by having your business ranked higher in the search engines, to name but a few. The bottom line however is that you will generate more leads and sales.

There’s dozens of reasons why you should choose SEO over other marketing channels but for the moment I will focus on the two below, results and reach.

Results are tangible

With traditional marketing such as newspaper advertising, magazines, radio, billboards etc it is very hard to know whether or not this advertising generated a sale for your business. Thanks to Google Analytics you are able to determine the keywords that your potential clients are entering in to the search engine that led them to your site, there locality, the length of time they stayed on your site and how many pages they visited while on your site.

Reach is vast

Another added benefit of SEO is that your reach is endless because so many people use search engines as their first port of call when looking for a product or service. With traditional marketing channels your advertisement may have been missed by a potential client but with SEO your audience is already looking for you.

It is also worth bearing in mind that SEO is affordable and has one of the best ROI (Return on Investment) when compared to traditional methods.

Remember that results do not happen overnight but in the long term SEO is one of the most effective online marketing channels for small businesses.
